What is Meekness?

Matthew 5:5 CSB – Blessed are the humble [meek], for they will inherit the earth.

Galatians 2:20 CSB – I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Acts 26:14 CSB – Jesus said, Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me? It is hard for you to kick against the goads.’

Galatians 2:20 CSB – I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.

Examples of Meekness

Abraham

Genesis 13:8-9, 13-15 CSB – So Abram said to Lot, “Please, let’s not have quarreling between you and me, or between your herdsmen and my herdsmen, since we are relatives. Isn’t the whole land before you? Separate from me: if you go to the left, I will go to the right; if you go to the right, I will go to the left.”

“Look from the place where you are. Look north and south, east and west, 15 for I will give you and your offspring[c] forever all the land that you see.

Joseph

Esther

Esther 4:16c CSB – I will go to the king even if it is against the law. If I perish, I perish.”

Jesus

Matthew 11:29 CSB – Jesus, ..learn from Me, because I am lowly and humble in heart,

Matthew 28:18 CSB – All authority on heaven and earth has been given to Me…

Philippians 2:5-8 CSB – Adopt the same attitude as that of Christ Jesus,

who, existing in the form of God,
did not consider equality with God
as something to be exploited.
Instead he emptied himself
by assuming the form of a servant,
taking on the likeness of humanity.
And when he had come as a man,
he humbled himself by becoming obedient
to the point of death—
even to death on a cross.

Meekness Practiced

Meekness in our attitude toward God’s Word

James 1:19ff CSB – My dear brothers and sisters, understand this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger,

…ridding yourselves of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent, humbly [meekly] receive the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.

Meekness In Suffering

Hebrews 12:5-7, 11 CSB – My son, do not take the Lord’s discipline lightly
or lose heart when you are reproved by him,
for the Lord disciplines the one he loves
and punishes every son he receives.

Endure suffering as discipline: God is dealing with you as sons.

11 No discipline seems enjoyable at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

Meekness with our resources

2 Corinthians 8:9 CSB – For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ: Though he was rich, for your sake he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich.

The Promise: The Meek Inherit the Earth

Psalm 37:9 CSB – evildoers will be destroyed,
but those who put their hope in the Lord will inherit the land.

Psalm 37:10,11 CSB –

A little while, and the wicked person will be no more;…
11 But the humble will inherit the land
and will enjoy abundant prosperity.

Philippians 2:6-11 CSB – [Jesus] who, existing in the form of God,
did not consider equality with God
as something to be exploited.
Instead he emptied himself
by assuming the form of a servant,
taking on the likeness of humanity.
And when he had come as a man,
he humbled himself by becoming obedient
to the point of death—
even to death on a cross.

For this reason God highly exalted him
and gave him the name
that is above every name,
10 so that at the name of Jesus
every knee will bow—
in heaven and on earth
and under the earth—
11 and every tongue will confess
that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.

2 Corinthians 8:9 CSB – For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ: Though he was rich, for your sake he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich.

Philippians 4:19 CSB – And my God will supply all your needs according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
